Green Building And Renovating

home

Homeowners across Florida may be finding it harder to deal with living in the state than ever this winter. Not only has this winter seen an unusual level of cold sweep across the state, but almost two dozen new sinkholes have opened up this winter and to top it off 125,000 Florida property insurance policies held by State Farm will not be renewed by the company.

When the temperature drops over the farmland in Florida during the winter, farmers spray strawberry crops with water to help protect them from the cold. The thin layer of ice helps to protect the plants from frost damage which can damage the fruit.

Though this is a standard practice in Florida’s winters, usually it is only necessary a few times over the course of the winter. Normally, the Florida nights with freezing temperatures are few and far between; this year, because the winter has been so frigid, the farmers have been working hard to salvage their crops and spraying them far more often than normal. The resulting rapid 60ft drop in groundwater is causing new sinkholes to form; at least 22 new sinkholes have opened up, mostly in strawberry-growing areas like Dover. Some homes built in farming areas that are sinkhole-prone may be at risk to structural damage because the pressure of a home isn’t enough to help keep a sinkhole plugged the way a large building does.

To further add to homeowner woes in the state, the high cost of covering home owners in hurricane prone areas of coastal Florida is causing State Farm to cut 125,000 home owner policies over the next year and a half. The company quit writing new insurance policies two years ago due to the high cost of liability in Florida.

Most of the policies are not being renewed in the coastal areas, which are at higher risk for hurricane damage. State Farm had previously planned to withdraw from home owner’s insurance coverage in Florida altogether, but clashed with the Insurance Commissioner over the plan. Due to the excessive costs of hurricane damage that can be incurred in the state, the company claimed to require an almost 50% increase in rates.

Luckily for Floridians, both of these problems are occurring in discrete areas of the state; and while the insurance issue is a result of a yearly weather occurrence, there are other insurance providers who can offer these home owners coverage at least. The problems that the state is experiencing due to the cold weather are hopefully something that Florida is not going to see again for a very long time.

Why choose marble fireplaces?

home

Although the need for a traditional solid fuel fire has long past in most centrally-heated homes, an ornamental fireplace is still regarded as a special part of the main sitting room. A fireplace acts as an aesthetic focal point and helps create a homely atmosphere. It can certainly look a bit nicer than a large plasma television in the eyes of some individuals.

Most people prefer a fireplace that is made from a traditional, durable material, even if the final design is required to be modern in appearance. This desire for the old may derive from the images of fireplaces that are dominant in our collective imagination.

A fireplace can be constructed specially, of course, but this can be time-consuming. It can also be very expensive if the homeowner feels the need to call in a professional to make sure the build is carried out properly. A popular alternative is to buy a ready-made fireplace made from a quality material yet which can be delivered direct to your home and is ready for immediate installation. Marble is a popular material for these kinds of read-made fireplaces.

Marble fireplaces can be constructed from pure marble or, alternatively, micro marble, a cultured marble which is more uniform than pure marble in both appearance and structure. The advantage of ready-made marble fireplaces is that marble is a clean, neutral-looking material that can lend itself equally well to the creation of both traditional and modern fireplace designs. It is also of course renowned for its quality and durability. Marble, moreover, can be produced in a range of pleasing shades to suit most room decors. Marble fireplaces can vary in shade from pure white to sandstone.

At Marble Choice, we have a range of great value marble fireplaces, some complete with electric fires and some with in-built lighting.

Make the Most of your Space at Home and Improve your Energy Efficiency

home

Saving energy costs and adopting a greener approach to life are priorities for many of us if we are to combat the threat of limited fossil fuel resources and play our part in preventing global warming, before it is too late. But, it is better still if you can achieve those two aims and create a little more space around the home at the same time.

With a focus on how we use energy and by slightly changing our habits, we can easily improve the efficiency of our home environment. There are many different solutions to improving power consumption around the home. Some of them cost only a change in our outlook, whereas other improvements can be expensive to implement. However, help is out there in the form of grants and incentives from the government and utility companies, for those who qualify.

An example of a change of habits that can save money but is free to implement, concerns the use of mobile phone chargers. Most people have at least one mobile phone and by default a mobile phone charger. However, many leave their chargers permanently plugged in, even when their phone is not attached and charging. That uses electricity so by unplugging chargers and indeed, by switching off all electrical appliances rather than leave them in standby you will save even more power.

But, when it comes to creating space and making a positive change to your home’s infrastructure the installation of a new boiler could be the answer. If your boiler is older than 10 years old it is probably inefficient compared to today’s brand new models. A modern boiler will trim almost 40% off your annual heating bill according to research carried out by the Energy Saving Trust (EST), and it can also create more space as new boilers do not require great big water reservoirs to store hot water.

With a combi boiler water is super-heated on demand, so you do not need to store water in a tank and the space previously taken up by it can be re-used in a more positive way. There are warm front grants available for those who qualify, and utility companies have been instructed by the government to encourage the installation of more energy efficient devices, including the latest boilers. As a result power companies are offering a raft of benefits including free boiler servicing for a five years. In addition, a new boiler could also save you around £275 per year, depending upon your current consumption. So, as well as saving cash and having more control over your heating costs, you will also create a bit more valuable space.

Affordable Drywall in Bay Area

home

Unlike the previous years that spelled loud parties, we didn’t spend lavishly last Christmas and New Year. We would usually acquire home additions in San Jose five months prior to December to give the house a new look, but since the recession hit the country, not many of us felt the need for new custom homes in San Jose during the holidays. In our haven, my husband and I prepared ham leg cuts, potato salad, a plate of custard pie, and hot chocolate just enough for us and the kids.

Hubby and I didn’t have gifts for each other, too, but we managed to shop for the items on our children’s wish list. Christmas, after all, should be intended for kids not adults. After the holidays, I was ready to go back to our daily activities and work until my husband mentioned one evening over dinner that he spoke with the manager of a drywall installation company and got a good deal for the house.

I was surprised and thrilled at the same time to hear this, as I was totally clueless about his plan to acquire drywall in San Jose for our home. He said it was supposed to be a present for me and that he had actually ironed out his plan already but nature did not favor him. According to hubby, had he only had the funds before Christmas, he would’ve sent me and the kids to my parents’ house so he can supervise the home additions and drywall job. Unfortunately, his money didn’t arrive on time so this is going to be a late Christmas present for me and the kids.

I hugged and kissed him hard as I told him that he shouldn’t worry because our last Christmas and New Year turned out even more fun, as the kids seemed happier than before when friends constantly flocked our abode.

As we went on with our conversation, I learned that my husband tapped on a renowned drywall firm in Bay Area which specializes on texture installations. This company is famous for its versatility and expertise in Old World, Spanish Style and Skip Trowell textures. I can’t wait to see the output of the drywall service team. My husband, however, cut off my excitement when he said it’s not too late to surprise me and the kids so we better pack and go to my parents’ first while he oversees the work done to our home. He’ll let us know when our palace is ready for occupancy.

PURA UV (All in one Whole House Filtration)

home

Ultraviolet (UV) technology has been used for more than seven decades to eliminate disease-causing microorganisms, primarily in industrial and commercial applications. Today; however, this technology is gaining popularity in the residential sector because it can be applied to almost any water system, It adds no chemicals to the water, It wastes no water and it’s inexpensive to maintain.

To produce UV energy, electrical current stimulates mercury vapor held between the electrodes of a fluorescent-like lamp. The most commonly used UV lamp is a low pressure mercury vapor lamp with an energy output close to 265 nm most effective at killing microbes. Germicidal UV lamps are made with “hard glass” quartz which transmits 92 percent of UV energy far more than alternative materials.

Waterborne diseases may be caused by a wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms. Most are made up of a cell wall, a cytoplasm membrane and a DNA-bearing nucleic acid. Microbes are destroyed when UV light penetrates the cell wall and cytoplasm membrane and is absorbed by the nucleic acids. The UV energy rearranges DNA molecules and prevent the cells from reproducing. It’s then considered dead for all practical purposes. The degree of destruction of microbes is a product of UV intensity multiplied by contact time.

Ultraviolet is a safe, clean, easy-to- maintain method of assuring that water is free of bacteria. It is a proven technology that has no significant drawbacks. In some applications, its initial cost is a bit more than chlorination, but because of its low operating cost, it quickly pays for itself. It is essentially trouble-free. Most systems require only an annual change of lamp—like changing a light bulb—and a change of filter cartridges if the unit has accompanying filters.

The whole house Pura UV systems are design to convert common tap water into disinfected and pure water. The Ultraviolet Filtration System filters water at a flow rate of 8-10 gallons per minutes. Water is channel through a Stainless Steel UV Reaction Chamber. This point of entry (POE) Ultraviolet Filtration is usually installed in the main water feed of the house and its advance technology ensures the removal of microbiological contaminants. It’s a perfect companion for a Water softener system.

Pura systems come in various sizes, from small one gallon-per-minute undersink units for drinking water to the 15-gallon-per minute “Big Boy” series. Most of Pura sales are in the eight-to-ten gallon-per-minute “UV 20” whole house series.

A Solar Hot Water System Can be an Inexpensive Way to Go Solar

home

If the high cost of solar panels has discouraged you from going solar, you owe it to yourself to at least consider a solar hot water system. One of the most simple and least expensive ways to use solar energy is to heat water.

Home water heaters are one of the biggest sources of energy use in a home. At the same time heating water is also one of the most efficient and simple ways to use solar energy. Since the sun’s energy directly heats the water it’s more efficient than trying to convert sunlight to electricity and then have to store it somehow.

Unlike photovoltaics that require more expensive complex components, you can heat water with simple and inexpensive components. If you leave a hose layingout in the sun you have probably noticed the water inside can get hot pretty fast. That is how simple it is to heat water with the sun.

You can buy a solar hot water system for a few hundred dollars or up to $1000 or more. When you consider what an average houshold pays every month to heat their water, the cost of asolar hot water system is a bargain.

But a solar hot water heater doesn’t have to cost that much. You can build one yourself for less than $100. That’s for a well designed efficient one that will last many years or decades. Or you can build a crude one with parts you can probably pick up free if you know where to look.

In the hot summer months a solar water system can produce an excess of free hot water that can be used to heat a pool, wash your car, and many plants respond well to warm water. Try watering your garden with warm (not hot) water and see how well it responds. With free heated water the possibilities are open.

Whether you are interested in saving money, helping the environment, using renewable energy or just doing the right thing, solar energy is a good choice and a solar hot water system is a good low cost place to start.

Learn more about solar water heaters, where to buy them and how to build them yourself.

Magnetic Fields Are the Secret to Magnetic Generators

home

Clean energy is possible with a magnetic generator thanks to the inner workings of magnets. For home owners who are considering going the part of a magnetic power generator, then knowing the history of magnets, what magnetic fields are and how many different kinds of magnets there are will only make your jub much easier. You might not know it but magnets and what they are made from aren’t always the same. Magnets have been around since the Greeks discovered that lodestone attracted pieces of iron. Children and scientists have both been and continue to be intrigued by the nature of magnets and magnetic fields.

Did you know that the power of magnets can vary and they can be made from very different materials? Look in most kitchens around the world and you’ll see on fridges the most typical kind of magnet call permanent magnets. This is by far the most common magnet found today. These magnets create a magnetic field all the time. There is no on and off switch and they are always making a magnetic field. This ability is why fridge magnets don’t suddenly fall off your fridge door. Soft or temporary magnets are another magnet variety. It might already be clear that these magnets aren’t always creating a magnetic field. The life of the magnetic field they emit doesn’t last forever. So when are they considered magnets? When they are in the presence of a magnetic field and for a little time after, they continue to produce their own magnetic field. It is during these times that they are considered magnets. Electromagnets make up the final group of magnets. Magnetic fields are found in these magnets when electricity is passing through their wires.

Greatly different materials can be used in the construction of magnets. Ceramic magnets are the kind stuck to your fridge. Science classrooms around the world use these on a daily basis. They consist of iron oxide in a ceramic composite. These magnets aren’t very powerful or strong. Alnico magnets are made of aluminum, nickel and cobalt}. While this kind of magnet offers a much strong magnetic field than ceramic magnets, they are still not the strongest. The final group of magnets made from rare-earth metal fall into two groups; neodymium and samarium cobalt. These two groups of magnets offer the strongest magnetic fields known to this day.

Why and how do magnets work? Magnets do what they do thanks to all of the magnetic domains within ferromagnetic materials, like iron, cobalt and nickel, pointing in the same direction. A magnetic domain is basically a small magnet in itself. Typically, the magnetic domains in iron and other magnetic materials aren’t aligned and they cancel each other out. The higher the number of these domains that point in the same direction, the stronger the magnetic field of the magnet is. This is why magnets function as they do.

Magnetic generators operate based on the presence of magnetic fields in magnets. This magnetic field makes the creation of clean home power from magnetic power generators possible. You’ll have a much great appreciate of the home electricity you create thanks to knowing just how magnets and your magnetic generator works.

Ways to Keep Your Piano Clean Without Damaging It

home

Those who have a piano know what a joy playing it can be. Learning to play the piano is a tradition in many families that is passed down from generation to generation. Much like any other musical instrument, one has to take care of it to ensure it lasts. One such method of care is regularly cleaning the piano without causing any damage.

The following is list of tips on how to keep your piano clean without damaging it:

1. Over time, piano keys, especially those made with ivory can accumulate dirt and oily fingerprint stains. Use a lint free cloth to wipe the keys.

2. Use a soft cloth that has been dipped in a mixture of warm water and a gentle soap or white toothpaste for washing ivory keys. For plastic keys, use warm water mixed with vinegar. Make sure the cloth is damp, not soaked, as you do not want any solution running in between the keys and into the piano. A mild soap or moist cloth with dish detergent can help remove tough to clean stains.

3. Completely dry the keys with a soft dry cloth. If you are using white toothpaste to clean the ivory keys, you can remove the toothpaste after rubbing by wiping the keys with a soft cloth that has been dipped in milk. It is better to use milk because chemicals from cleaners can damage the keys.

4. When cleaning a piano’s wood finish, gently wipe the piano with a soft lint free cloth. Then use soft cotton that has been dipped in warm water to wipe down the piano. Make sure the cotton is moist, and not soaked.

5. Use a piano polisher to polish the piano. There are special polishes for pianos that are designed not to damage the piano. Do not use any aerosol spray that contains chemicals such as silicone as they can damage the piano.

6. To reduce the amount of dust from accumulating on the keys as well as any damage from occurring, keep the keyboard cover closed when not in use. As well, keep the keys out of the sun as it will yellow the keys.

7. Use a humidifier to keep moisture from getting inside the piano. High humidly can damage the piano and cause changes to its tuning. As well, the strings can rust when there is moisture.

Regularly wiping the piano with lint free cloth will help prevent dirt and dust build up. Don’t clean the inside of the piano because it contains a mesh of strings, sensitive components, and components that can move and break easily. Hire a professional piano technician as they can clean it without causing any damage.

Pianos have become a well loved addition to millions of homes. To keep your piano in good condition and the tuning at optimum levels, it is recommended that you regularly maintain your piano with proper cleaning methods and have it serviced by a professional. It will help you enjoy this wonderful instrument for many years.
